EPA 2010 is the final phase of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) plan to assure that new diesel engines run cleaner by the year 2010. In fact, EPA 2010 standards require that NOx levels from new trucks be reduced to almost zero.

The leading technology to meet the EPA 2010 plan is Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology – an emissions reduction system requiring the use of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF).

What is NOx?
Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) are exhaust elements that contribute to acid rain, smog, and greenhouse gas levels.

What is Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology?
Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology reduces NOx emissions to near zero levels, while at the same time, delivering improved fuel economy and reliability. SCR technology does not change the design or operation of the basic engine. SCR works by injecting diesel exhaust fluid into the exhaust stream only as required. DEF works with the heat of the exhaust and the catalyst to convert NOx into nitrogen and water vapor - two harmless and natural components of the air we breathe.

What is DEF?
Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is one of the key elements involved in the SCR process. It is a nontoxic solution of 67.5% water and 32.5% automotive grade urea. DEF helps to convert NOx into nitrogen gas and water vapor. It is stable, colorless, odorless, and meets accepted international standards for purity and composition.

Is DEF toxic or hazardous?
No. DEF is not flammable, toxic or harmful to the environment. It is classified under the minimum-risk category of transportable fluids.

How does SCR and DEF increase fuel efficiency?
Since the SCR works after combustion, your engine can run at higher NOx levels. This means it can run hotter, so you won’t lose fuel efficiency to heat rejection, and there will be less particulate matter going into the DPF filter. When particulate matter does build up, you can run DPF regenerations at lower temperatures, so you burn even less fuel.

How much DEF will I need?
DEF usage will be approximately 2% of the diesel fuel used. Or, for every 50 gallons of diesel fuel used, 1 gallon of DEF will be used.

Will my truck stop if I run out of DEF?
No. An engine will not shut down or be prevented from restarting as a result of running out of DEF. If your DEF tank runs dry, engine horsepower will de-rate until the DEF tank is refilled.
